When Nicholas Hooper, composer for fifth and sixth Harry Potter films, was set the task to write music for Dumbledore's death, he decided to look back upon the music of mourning from hundreds of years ago. The piece he produced is not only beautifully simple, but also uses a bass line that links composers and musicians across hundreds of years - from Monteverdi to Bach, to The Beatles to Radiohead. Let's find out what ties them all together.

Why Jurassic Park's Music is So Powerful
Просмотров 399 тыс.2 года назад
John William's score for Jurassic Park contains some of the most iconic themes ever written for film. But although the music by itself is deeply affecting, the real power comes through the complex relationships we make with the music when it's paired with Spielberg's visuals. In this essay, I consider why the music for Jurassic Park is so powerful, and why it has stayed with us all of these yea...
What's the Colour of Music? Messiaen and Colour
Просмотров 51 тыс.3 года назад
Many composers over the years have claimed to experience synaesthesia, a condition where one sense is activated by experiencing another, and for music, this normally means that when someone hears sounds, they see colours. Scriabin, Liszt and Ligeti are some well-known examples of synesthetes, but among these composers, there is only one who truly dedicated his life to exploring the colours of m...
What does it mean to be a musician in 2021?

Over the past year, I've been working with music students from a high school on Mercer Island in Seattle to create of a new piece of music for their wind band. It became a huge collaborative effort, and I ende...
1917 - How Music Propels The Story
Просмотров 37 тыс.3 года назад
The score for Sam Mendes' 1917, by composer Thomas Newman, plays one of the most significant roles in storytelling in the film, partly due to the way the music is used, but more importantly because of the nature of the film's construction. By building 1917 around a single, un-broken shot, it brings the music into even greater focus, creating an even stronger link between story and music, propel...
What links ‘The Great Wave’ and Debussy’s ‘La Mer’?
Просмотров 46 тыс.3 года назад
Hokusai's 'The Great Wave Off Kanagawa' is one of the most recognisable paintings in art history. But why did Claude Debussy use a version of it on the front cover of the his orchestral masterpiece, 'La Mer'? In this essay, I look at the influence of Japanese art on cultural life in France in the 19th Century, and consider the connections between 'The Great Wave' and 'La Mer'. Art and Music pla...

Why Does Choral Music Sound So Good?

Why Does Choral Music Sound So Good?
This is standard classic opera writing music, in Cavalleria Rusticana for example every character (even the town) has his own theme!! Another good example is the leitmotif of Wagner operas. Elfman indeed is a legendary composer.
excellent!
Smith’s song suits the film as it is, Radiohead’s represents what the film could have been. When this song is put with the title sequence, it becomes an immensely more creepy experience. I think Spectre as a film is not as bad as people say it is, more a product of many missed opportunities, and the biggest one was perhaps the creepiness that they were too nervous to go all in on. It comes through in the chair torture scene and the beginning scene of the next film, and they really do well with it when they try, but otherwise they just can’t face the idea of drifting away from a sanitised triple A blockbuster. Shame.
Coming back a year or two after watching this masterfully crafted appraisal of Shore's masterpiece for the first time to say that it is, without a doubt, my favorite and arguably the best made on this platform. I share it with others all the time. Thank you for the work you put into it and please make more content! Music lovers like me consume it!
Eyyyy nice
Nope, even in just hearing the Grey Havens music, I'm still an emotional wreck😅
They REJECTED this?! Madness I say, MADNESS!
It doesn't sound like the best song, it sounds that you like to fanboy over music structures.
This is one of my favourite channels ever. Thank you for your work
Shame you didn’t let us listen to ‘the best bond theme of all time’.
it's amazing how the visuals, storytelling, and music all match up perfectly
Too wishywashy, disconnected and unfocused. There is to "catchiness", its too nebulous and vague.
Wonderful video
A fictional account of how Ravel composed Bolero. It was inspired by and commissioned by Ida Rubenstein who happened to be a ballet dancer, actress, and nude model in Europe. Bolero is on the list of top 10 sexiest classical compositions.
I can't believe they picked the Sam smith song over this
if you asked me they probably used a guitar and maybe a drumset but idk
Well done Radiohead ❤
This is beyond detailed and beautiful of a breakdown. Thank you for this and your work
The Spectre theme made me want to leave the theatre, though in hindsight that wouldn't have been a bad idea
though the Smith song is interesting, "they" did a great injustice to ol'Radiohead by rejecting Spectre!....it IS perfect!
StarWars somehow still gives me goosebumps: Now This is StarWars- what it's truly about- that feeling baby! It has depth and a breath of fresh air- somehow authentic and nearly encouraging and loving. Dang beautiful what ever it is
The part where he fails to dock and cooper succeeds had me sitting open mouthed in the cinema
You can bet your bottom dollar this bloke couldn't write a decent tune to save his life.
3:48
Gee I wonder what it’d sound like without an explanation riding over every single note of the whole damn thing.
Spectre sucked anyway, that would be a shame that a masterpiece of a song gets associated with an abomination of a movie, that song should be kept for a future great Bond film.
Im pretty sure that from like 2 minutes to 3 or something like that his motion graphics didnt load in or something and he forgot to check and then he uplkoaded it and it did really well so he didnt change it lol. one more reason to watch your videos after rendering
It"s good but not as the title suggested a perfect bond theme,
Chris Cornell’s you know my name is my personal favorite bond theme. His voice is just perfect for the vibe.
I was 10 when we were able to watch The Fellowship on DVD. It will always be my favorite movie no matter what other movies come along. It means so much to me and is such a great part of my life.
gota thank hollywood for their choice of pushing a woke pedophile instead of going for the best option. really shows how far they've fallen.
I always like to say this and UP's soundtracks are probably the best soundtracks ever made to connect with emotionally, they are truly a top standard for other movies soundtrack arrangements
The reason is, because it's not really a song about a toy. It's a song about "when she loved me".
this video literally changed my ears(literally because it made me into music theory)
The films still shit though
It will always be there coz it's bond's identity and to be recognized..
The Mouse ruined Star Wars, but they weren't powerful enough to spoil John Williams. Well done, Sir!
3:59 The way you edited the music to the footage there is very well done.
Messiaen's color association with the notes are completely wrong when each note is raised in octaves into the light spectrum. Not one note is correct, the entire concept of it from his perspective is subjective and imaginary.
Hey, what is the song at 2:51 . Thanks
Man of War - Radiohead
@@mr.dogeface Thank you <3

Fantastic analysis and commentary.
JUST NOT A SMITH FAN.
i think lots of you will not understand but for me as a 61year german male and bond fan since childhood this song sounds not really finished or over finished. and not hit the target . . it sounds like they trys hard to be a bond song but there so much other things include and around that its simply too much... dont kill me to hard ... (just a friendly phrase.. i dont care) and btw Millenium would been at his time even a great bond song. ....in this way you can find here in youtube: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Millennium Robbie Williams.
Maybe it just needed some audible vocal!
Awesome great explenation
The vocals were not catchy and pop enough for them. I have to agree though the music in Radiohead's tune is beautiful. Serious music does not sell like pop does.
To Summarize. Great song.
Kandinsky is one of those artist who you know it when you see & hear it.
I 1000% disagree all of his Ost sound the same the most overrated musicians of all time sure it's iconic but that doesn't mean that it's good. But Jesus try listening to Joe Hisaishi who made unique and such as iconic Ost for spirited away my neighbor totoro the boy and the heron kiki's delivery service his Ost is great and different and not always the same garbage like with John Williams. I personally think it's just nostalgie of people liking his music.
